एक धनी व्यक्ति था, उसके चार लडके थे | तीन लडकों का शादी हो चुका था, वे अपने काम-धंधे में लग चुके थे वे आत्मनिर्भर थे, पिता भी इनके काम- काज से खुश थे क्योंकि वे उतरदायित्व समझने लगे थे और पिता को भी सहयोग कर रहे थे | आमदनी अच्छी हो रही थी | छोटा लडका जो अविवाहित था क्योंकि जो भी लडकी वाले उसकों देखने के लिए आते थे | बात बनते बनते बिगड जाता था अर्थात सब कुछ पसंद होने के बाद भी लडके के चलते रिश्ते टूट जाता था| इसका सबसे बडा कारण यह था कि उसका शर्त सुनकर लडकी वाले डर जाते थे कि हमारे लडकी को दु: ख देगा |

लडका का शर्त थी कि जो लडकी मुझसे शादी करेगी तो मैं उसे दो चप्पल मारूंगा | जब मैं घर के अंदर जाऊँगा उस वक्त दो चप्पल और घर से निकलूँगा उस वक्त दो चप्पल | ऐसा शर्त सुनकर सभी रिश्ते बिगाड़ जाते थे | कोई भी उस लडके के साथ रिश्ते के लिए तैयार नही थे  | लडके की वजह से सब ओर से बदनाम हो रहे थे | उसके पिता और भाईयों का नाम लोकप्रिय था | हर व्यक्ति उसके परिवार को चाहते थे, इज्जत और सम्मान देते थे | पिता और भाईयों के मधुर और सहयोगपूर्ण व्यवहार से लोग काफी प्रभावित थे |  

लडका देखने में सुन्दर था रंग गोरा, सुडौल और गठीला शरीर, लंबा था जो भी देखने आते थे उसको देखकर बहुत खुश होते थे कि अच्छा घर के साथ अच्छा लडका भी मिल | लेकिन शर्त के कारण आत्मा कांप उठते थे | लडका ऐसा था कि वह किसी का नही सुनता | हठी स्वभाव का था | अपने परिवार के आदर्श और संस्कार से मेल नहीं खाता था जिसके कारण समाज में निन्दा का पात्र बन गये | शिक्षित था पर सभ्य नहीं ,जो सभ्य व्यवहार उनके परिवार के सदस्यों में देखने को मिलता था | उसका व्यवहार परिवार से बिलकुल अलग था |

यह बात समाज में चर्चा का विषय बन गया, जब यह बात एक लडकी ने सुनी तो उसे आश्चर्य हुआ कि लडका ऐसा क्यों सोचता है ? वह अपने आप में सोचने लगी, कुछ तो है | लडकी सुशील और विदुषी थी | वह घर में एकलौती सन्तान थी | काफि सोच विचार के बाद अपने पिता के समक्ष बात को रखी तो पिता के आंखों में अंधेरा छा गया लेकिन खुद को सभांल लिया | परिवार के सदस्यों के बीच इस विषय पर गहन विचार- विमर्श किया गया | पिता को पूर्ण विश्वास था कि मेरी लडकी काफी समझदार और विदुषी है, इसलिए जिन्दगी के बारे में फैसला लेने का अधिकार खुद है और हमलोग इसकेे जीवन में दखलंदाजी नहीं कर सकते हैं | अन्ततः शादी के लिए सहमति बनी और उसे (लडकी को) शादी करने की अनुमति मिल गयी |

 दूसरे दिन लडकी पक्ष वाले लडके के पिता को सूचना देकर उसके घर आये |दोनों पक्ष के लोग बैठे, वहाँ लडके को भी बुलाया गया, जब लडके से पुछा गया तो लडके ने शर्त सुनाया | लडकी के पिता पर कोई प्रभाव नहीं पडा और बेटी के कहानुसार शादी की बात तय हो गयी | शुभ मुहूर्त देखकर निश्चित दिन तय किया गया | समाजिक रीति- रिवाज के अनुसार लड़की के यहाँ बारात आये और ंवर- वधू को मण्डप में बैठाकर वैदिक मंत्रोंचारण के साथ अग्नि के सात फेरे करवाए | विवाह सम्पन्न कराया गया | 

शादी के दूसरे ही दिन जब घर में प्रवेश करने लगा उस वक्त पत्नी को चप्पल से मारने के लिए तैयार हो गया तभी पत्नी ने कहा - ठहरिए, आप तभी मार सकते हैं जब आप कमाकर लाईगा और मुझे दीजियेगा बिना कुछ दिये आप मार नहीं सकते हैं | यह बात उसके दिल में कांटे की तरह चुभ गया और किसी से बिना कुछ कहे घर से निकल गया | वह काम की तलाश करने लगा पर कहीं काम नहीं मिल रहा था | काम की तलाश में बहुत दूर निकल गया | भुख- प्यास के चलते मुंह सूख रहा था , एक कदम आगे नहीं चल पा रहा था | 

वह बहुत थक गया था इसलिए गाँव के नजदीक एक बरगद के पेड़ के नीचे बैठ गया | अचानक उसको झपकी आ गई और गहरी नींद में सो गए | गाँव के एक साव जी भार में तेल लेकर उसी रास्ते से गुजर रहा था कि अचानक उसपर नजर पड गया | वह पास जाकर देखा और सोचने लगा | यह तो खाते- पीते घर का लगता है | उसने उसको उठाकर पुछा कि तुम कौन हो और यहाँ क्यों सोये हो ? उसने साव जी को बताया कि मैं काम की तलाश में निकला हूँ पर कहीं भी काम नही मिला | साव जी सोचने लगा कि इसको काम पर रख लेता हूँ तो केल्हु से ज्यादा तेल निकालेंगे और आमदनी अच्छी होगी | साव जी ने कहा - केल्हु चलाने का काम करोगे | उसने हां में जबाब दिया | साव ने कहा - शाम को आ जाना | कल से तुम्हें काम मिल जायेगा  |

वह शाम को साव जी के यहाँ गया | साव जी स्नान करने को कहा | स्नान के बाद भरपेट भोजन करवाया और रहने के लिए एक कमरा भी दिया | दूसरे दिन से काम करने लगा और ईमानदारी से काम करने लगा | वह इतना काम करवाने लगा कि उसका चेहरा बिगड़ गया | अच्छा भोजन मिलता था पर आराम करने का समय नहीं मिलता था और न ही दाढ़ी - मूछें कमाने का और न ही स्नान करने का समय मिलता था | उसके बाल और दाढ़ी बढ़ चुके थे | अपना परिवार के सदस्य भी जल्दी पहचान नहीं सकता था | 

इधर छोटी बहू को अंदेशा होने लगा क्योंकि उसको निकले हुए एक  वर्ष पूरे होने को था | उसे चिंता होने लगी कि उसका कहीं पता नही है | मुझे स्वयं ही पता लगाना चाहिए क्योंकि मेरे बात से ही क्रोधित होकर निकले हैं | वह ससूर के पास जाती है और सच्चाई बताती है | वह ससूर से निवेदन करती है कि वह मेरे ही कारण निकले हैं तो  इसका प्रायश्चित मुझे ही करना होगा | मै समझती थी कि जब गुस्सा ठंडा हो जायेगा तो कुछ ही दिन में घर लौट जायेंगे | मुझे पति की खोज - बिन करने की अनुमति दीजिये, इसके साथ चार- पांच आदमी और उनके रहने-खाने के लिए कुछ धन चाहिए |

ससूर बहुत ही ईमानदार और नेक थे, उसको अपने छोटी बहू पर पूर्ण विश्वास था कि वह जो भी कर रही है बेटे की भलाई के लिए ही कर रही है | ससूर उसको अपने पति की खोज-  बिन करने की अनुमति दे दिए | वह अपने पति की तलाश बहुत ही जोर- शोर से करने लगी | उसे दो सप्ताह के अंदर पता चला कि किसी साव जी यहाँ केल्हु से तेल पेरने का काम कर रहे हैं |  वह मन ही मन बहुत खुश हुईं | चलो मेरे बात का कुछ तो असर हुआ  |  

दूसरे दिन उस गाँव में गई और साव जी को बुलवाई | जब साव जी उसके पास आये तो उसने साव जी को अपना पता और परिचय दिया उसने बताया कि वो मेरे पति है और मैं उसे लेने आई हूँ | पहले मै उसे देखना चाहती हूँ | ध्यान रहे कि उसको मेरे यहाँ आने का भनक तक नहीं लगना चाहिए | साव जी उसंकी वेश- भूषा को देख कर हक्का-  बक्का रह गया और खुद को शर्मिंदगी महसूस करने लगा | वह साव जी के मनोभाव समझते हुए कहती है - साव जी इसमे शर्माने और पश्चाताप करने की बात नहीं है | यह तो कर्म का फल है, जो भी होता है अच्छे के लिए ही होता है  | चलिए मुझे दिखाईये और यहाँ  से मेरे जाने के बाद ही छुट्टी दीजिएगा |  साव जी उसको छिपकर दिखाते हैं और इसके बाद अपने आदमियों के साथ वहाँ से चल देती है | 

वह मुख्य मार्ग से होकर आती है और एक तलाब के भीड़ पर एक अशोक का वृक्ष था उसके नीचे अपना चेहरा को ढककर बैठती है | वह पति का आने का इंतजार करती है  और आदमियों से छुपकर रहने को कहती है | उसका पति भी उसी मार्ग से आता है और पानी पीने के लिए तलाब में जैसे ही उतरता है कि आवाज देती है , पहले अशोक के पेड़ के नीचे आओ उसके बाद पानी पीओ |  वह अशोक के पेड़ के पास आता है | वह कहती है - यहाँ जो कोई भी पानी पीने के लिए आता है उसको यहाँ स्वेच्छा से कुछ देना पड़ता है तभी पानी पी सकता है | वह जल्दी से सौ का रुपए निकालता है और देकर जाने लगता है  तो पुनः कहती है - जो आता है उसको पहचान के लिए उसके शरीर पर रंग लगाते हैं ताकि फिर आये  बिना पैसे दिए पानी पी सकता है | वह उसके शरीर पर तीन काला रंग लगाती है | एक पीठ पर, दूसरा जांघ पर और तीसरा बांए हाथ के बांह पर लगाती है और पानी पीने के लिए कहती है | 

वह पानी पीकर जाने लगता है | उसके घर पहुँचने से पहले ही पत्नी घर पहुँचती है और ससूर को उसको आने की  शुभ समाचार देतीं हैं  | वह ससूर से इस रहस्य को नही बताने की निवेदन करती है | ससूर भी अपनी छोटी बहू से रहस्य को नहीं बताने का आश्वासन देते हैं |  जब पति घर पहुँचते हैं तो वह सज - धज कर द्वार पर स्वागत के लिए खडी होती है | वह पत्नी को देखकर मारने के लिए तैयार हो जाता है तो कहती है - स्वामी जी आप इतने दिनों तक कहाँ थे? क्या कर रहे थे? पहले बताईए तो सही | वह बताने में संकोच करने लगे | वह समझ गई और उसके रहस्य को खोल दी | प्रमाण के लिए वो सौ के रुपये को दिखाई और तीन काले धब्बे के बारे में बताई जो अशोक के पेड़ के नीचे लगाई थी | वह काफी शर्मिंदा हुए और पत्नी से माफी मांगी |

Sav ji started thinking that if I keep this to work, then I will extract more oil than Kelhu and the income will be good. Sav ji said - you will do the work of running Kelhu. He answered yes Saw said - come in the evening. You will get work from tomorrow.

Her husband also comes from the same route and as soon as he descends into the pond to drink water, the sound gives, first come under the Ashoka tree and then drink water. He comes near the Ashoka tree. She says - Whoever comes here to drink water has to give something here voluntarily, only then can he drink water. He quickly takes out a hundred rupees and starts giving it away, then again says - To recognize the one who comes, he applies color on his body so that he can drink water without paying money again. She applies three black colors on his body. One on the back, the other on the thigh and the third on the arm of the left hand and asks to drink water.

He starts drinking water. Even before reaching his house, the wife reaches home and gives good news to her father-in-law about her arrival. She requests her father-in-law not to reveal this secret. The father-in-law also assures not to tell the secret to his younger daughter-in-law. When the husband reaches home, she stands ready to welcome him at the door.
